Sony VPL-VW80 and destruction of contrast

Recently, I fell into our hands a Sony VPL-VW80 with not too many hours on his back, somewhere over 1000, which presented a mystery problem. Had lost completely black, which had almost become worse and from DLP.

Measuring we found a number on/off contrast for literally crying … under 2500:1 (with enabled dynamic IRIS). As about it turns out an Optoma HD25 BC, which at least curious, to tragic.

And well a DLP that saves the situation with the high ansi contrast and great brightness. The image of an SXRD with on/off contrast at such low levels, literally not seen …

Also because of both uploaded black (almost grey) there was apparent gamma compression on all IRE and that with nothing exceeded 1.7, and if we tried. As you can understand the picture was more washed out and from Data projector!

After trying every possible setting through the wildly complex projector service menu ended up that the problem has to do with hardware now. Something had happened to the optic of forcing the projector playing in substance with very bad black. What though?

Since we were now sure, I lingered to move into open surgery optic.

On the construction quality of Sony won’t say much, a figure equal to a thousand words says a proverb, and there is wrong.

Just be happy whenever we come into contact with such a well designed and quality projector.

Everything electric in Sony’s lens (focus, zoom, lens) which means a lot of cables and difficult disassembly.

It took no more than 10 minutes to find the optical damage the projector. The three filters that are embedded onto the Prism and played double role (polwnoyn and reflect light) had completely lost their paving and with their capacity to polwnoyn the light. As you understand non-polarized light in the Panel automatically mean non-managed, hence bad black (absolute short).

Because these filters are coated reflection (mirror) was extremely difficult to be photographed and to see the damage, so we kept in front of the camera lens another polarizing filter so that there are no reflections on photography. Below you can see the damaged coating.

Here looks much better, new filter should have this pink coating has now stayed only at the edges. In downtown and in General where the light was going through, having been destroyed entirely, has disappeared.

Talking with a friend coworker on the other side of the Atlantic told me that is something that has again-face and even gave me to understand that it is a common phenomenon in SXRD projectors, which I knew not.

The owners of SXRD projectors are very difficult to understand, because very few of them have a measuring instrument and checking the contrast of their projector after few hundred hours.

Also, the human eye is easy to be fooled, lamp fall something, something … OK paliose and not playing as new or when there is no direct comparison with another projector (which in most cases does not exist-we sell our old model and then buy new) are responsible for the fact that the problem doesn’t come out almost never in the limelight (in forums or on internet).

If you want my personal opinion as a technician, this is that the problem is more general because I can’t believe hardware failure in all three filters simultaneously on only specific projector. If you read the article one owner Sony SXRD projector and wants to inform us whether it has found something similar to the projector, it would be ideal to be able to confirm if indeed the problem concerns and other models. For now I’d suggest that if you want to buy secondhand SXRD, do it only after the measure on/off contrast of the projector and find that your not giving small numbers. The same would suggest and for them because their LCOS optical has a corresponding drawing with multiple layers on some filters and the truth is that I have heard problem in gamma and black in some JVC models after some 100s of hours.

Repairing such damage is unprofitable because it requires changing the optical block, expensive replacement (2o00 > euros). Nevertheless, and with the consent of the owner (because the risk of repair is large enough) will try to do the impossible and to repeat the work with a combination of circular polarization filters. A few days ago told me that Nick had his hands on a Sony VPL-VW80, and that he had made a particular impression that the black headlight was in very bad levels. The projector also seemed to be completely flatarismenos in the picture. I went too well for him to see and measure, trying to figure out where the problem is.

With the first visual impressions of the projector with the reference paternakia the problem was neat, stank eye we call. Black headlight was very bright, either with fixed iris in all locations, or by using the dynamic Iris in both locations (auto 1 and 2). We tried through the projector’s menu, playing in all modes, but there was nothing.

So was my laptop and the i1 Pro, where as you can see here, measured the Cinema Projector mode 1. Had preceded the measurement on/off contrast of the projector with the CA813 at 2,344:1, with the IRIS to enabled and 1036:1 with IRIS disabled.

As you can see, the i1 Pro recorded the important issue in gamma projector, measured at average 1.67! As shown in their respective blueprints, the gamma tends to become straight line. I cannot, of course, I’m sure, but I tend to believe that the projector’s gamma compressed so much toward the brighter because of the rise of the black brightness at these levels.

We entered into the service menu of the projector, where as Nick becomes real doom, but didn’t seem to happen something that affects the black level of the projector so negatively. Some film excerpts ensued with dark shots from Avatar, where the problem in Sony image stank eyes, the picture was very flatarismeni and had almost lost the 3D texture image.

Nick analyzes the technical part of the projector’s lysimatos, which shows clearly the source of the problem. As a consumer and each I cannot accept his conclusions as absolutely true, so the ball now goes directly to Sony. Here there seems to be an inherent manufacturing problem in Sony’s projector, just something 1ooo total hours, ruining the image of heavily. Let’s not forget that we are talking about a projector that cost over 5,000 euros as a freshman when introduced.
